October Challenge and Half Marathon

Today is my last official weigh in the for October Challenge, and drum roll... I don't lose any this week. Wonk, wonk, wonk. I thought for sure I'd have at least another pound off, but no. That is 5.5 lbs for October on the Fast Track. I committed to 30 days and I've decided I will stick with the Fast Track until the other 5 lbs are gone. Right now I am at 148 lbs. Even though the scale isn't reflecting it, my body is. I look and feel like I've lost 10 lbs, so I'll keep working until I actually have. How did everyone else do this week? I LOVE the quote to the left and feel like it really applies to the changes I've made in my life.

I had not taken the time you tell you all about my 2nd Half Marathon. So I thought I would concentrate on something positive and do that today! My friend Winnie ran it with me. She only started running recently and she did great! So if you have never ran before and think it's not possible to do something like this, she (if not myself) is a great example. This time I finished in 2:22, a couple of minutes slower than my first half, which I had trained better for. Several friends ran this race and they finished in just under 2 hours, which I cannot even imagine. But they are "real runners" and an inspiration to me! Maybe someday...

The race started off on the wrong foot: A.) I got my period that morning B.) My playlist was somehow corrupted and contained voicemails and Frank Sinatra (and I don't own any Frank Sinatra music!) instead of my carefully planned running songs. The first 11 miles clicked by pretty quickly, but Problem B kept me from really enjoying them. However Problem A made the last 2.1 miles seem longer and harder than all the 11 combined before them. I won't go into details, but let's just say it wasn't pretty. In the finish line photo I was so ready to be done and not enjoying it AT ALL anymore. When I first saw the finish line photo, I was actually confused by all the other runners celebrating as they cross the line. They all look so happy to be finishing and I was not happy. I didn't feel like celebrating until later that night (as I iced my knees) and then I realized "Hey, I did it!"

I give my running almost ZERO credit for my weight loss. Readers ask me this all the time. It has helped to tone my body as I lost the weight, and mentally it really helps clear my head. That helps with stress eating I think too. While training for this race I even gained a few pounds. I know some conventional wisdom disagrees with this, but it is true for me. For now I am going back to running two short runs a week until it is time to train for a new Half next year. I would like to figure out how to tone my upper arms and thighs in the meantime.

  1. HI Amber, congrats on the great loss for October and for your marathon. I seriously don't think I could ever do that. You are awesome - Have a great Halloween. :-)

  2. You did great for October, and the half-marathon! I am still mulling over if I need to put that in my bucket list or not - I do 5K and 9Ks, haven't ever gone farther than that....

I'm glad you're sticking with FT for now, too, I have a feeling it will motivate me that there is someone else 'still doing it' especially with my non results this month.

  3. Good job Ambdr.I think your weight loss was great. I just read a credible study that says they found people lost more weight when they sort of tricked their body by going between low calories( 1200) one day and then eating regular the next. I wondered if switching between FT and regular BFC might work good too. I'll try to do a post on this later in the week.

  4. Amazing!
At this point I can't even imagine running 1/2 mile.
I'm still FT'ing too. My goal is to go through the end of the year-and then reevaluate.
    Thanks for the updates

  5. 5.5 pounds for October was awesome, especially at your stage of your journey. I lost 4 pounds this week...I've been at a nasty plateau & decided this was the week to break thru it. Will post my tricks hopefully tonight. Have a great evening.

  6. Amber, great job on the weight loss and for sticking with the FT. You should be so proud of yourself and being able to run those marathons, I know that right now I can barely run a minute lol. You inspire me to work harder.

  7. Congratulations on the 1/2 and the 5.5! Your determination is awesome. I have officially been grain free and super low sugar for 9 days. My goal is 21 days, but with all the great food and coconut/almond flour/oil substitutions I think I'll be able to do it longer. I'm down 1/2 lb., but feel leaner already. Thanks for all your posts, you are an inspiration.

  8. I have a couple questions on the FT plan. For the 2 week menu, can you substitute the Ultimate Carb Swap recipes? Also what do you saute the tilapia, steak, etc. in? Really want to do this but want to do it right. Thanks

  9. Forgot to post to my just recent message. Really enjoy this blog. Congrats on the 1/2!
