I still remember discovering for the first time that artificial sweeteners were not allowed on the BFC. My first thought were my Coke Zeros, and I even think about what was in my CoffeeMate. I usually bought the Sugar Free variety and didn't even want to think about what was in it. I gave up the diet soda right away, on day one of the diet. But I had a large container of CoffeeMate and kept using it until it was empty. When I went shopping the next time and did my new label checking thing, I was SO disappointed that I couldn't find a good alternative for sweetening my coffee.
So now I have my coffee with heavy cream. I tried half & half, but I don't like it as much. I wish I did though, as it is much less expensive and I can buy it in larger containers at most stores. At Starbucks I order a Bold Brew of the Day or an Americano (ask for "Room for Cream"), and add half & half myself (Starbucks doesn't offer heavy cream). If you don't ask for "Room for Cream" you end up dumping coffee in the trash can, as the cup will be too full to add the half & half. I personally do not use any sweeteners in my coffee, I just weaned myself from it, even though I clearly liked a very sweet coffee before the BFC. I hear of people adding up to 3 packets of a stevia sweetener to a cup of coffee, and that can really add up. I recommend limiting yourself on the sweeteners as much as possible for things you eat regularly.
How do you drink your coffee on the Belly Fat Cure?
Amazon also has several flavored Stevia products that mimic the flavors found in CoffeeMate. They are very reasonably priced too. You can check them out HERE
Amber, your success on this program is amazing! I have never been able to stick to it and I need to because on WW, the sugar I am allowed to eat is insane...and it feels wrong but just can't seem to stick to low carb.
ReplyDeleteAnon - WW and BFC are really different.Although Ive certainly heard of ppl combining the two. Sticking to the BFC is WAY easier for me than sticking to Atkins. I think one big key is giving all artificial sweeteners. That gets rid of the cravings. Also, treat your sugar/carb cravings like an addiction and you see the whole thing in a new light!
ReplyDeleteI was using the Heavy whipping cream in my coffee, but it only comes in the larger container. Yesterday at the store it was 5.19. Really??? So I bought the tiny size of Whipping Cream for 1.69. I think the difference is 1 sugar and I just use a little to soften my coffee. I do use a packet of Stevia in the raw for added sweetness. I was putting the heavy whipping cream in place of things that required milk. It makes it yummy!!!
ReplyDeleteI used to like 1/2 & 1/2 in my coffee, but I realized I was only using it to cool off my drink so I could chug it faster. Now I just plop an ice cube in my coffee and drink it black. It's way cheaper, and just as satisfying.
ReplyDeleteI gotta have my coffee too!! ;) Half the time I have heavy cream in my coffee, the other half the time take it black. I have to limit the cream, because otherwise I drink waay too many calories. I usually have 3 half caff cups in the morning, and then some days I put on a pot of decaf and drink it through out the day. I limit my cream to 1 - 1 1/2 T per day. LOL Tree! I do the ice cube trick too.
ReplyDeleteWhat's in coffee mate original cream that we can't have? It has no sugar and I didnt think it had artifical does it?
ReplyDeleteHi Amber, I use unsweetened vanilla almond milk, just a splash, and 1 packet of Stevia in the raw. If by chance I decide to have a second cup i fill my coffee cup when it's half empty and use the sugar and almond milk already in it. This combination works for me!
ReplyDeleteI don't like the way coffee tastes with the liquid creams, so I use the powdered kind. Unflavored of course, with truvia. :-)
ReplyDeleteWhen I go to Starbucks, I ask for them to add some of their unsweetened whipping cream (not whipped) that they have cartons of behind the counter. They have always been happy to oblige! At home, I use a small slug of Whipping cream (33% MF), and a bigger amount of U/S Almond Milk or U/S Coconut Milk (So Delicious®)to get to the right "milkiness" without being too fatty tasting. I haven't sweetened my coffee for many years, so the change to BFC was easy in this regard.
ReplyDeleteI have heavy cream in my coffee too. But I do it a bit differently. I have one of those ISI nitrous-powered cream whipper dispensers like they use at Starbucks. I add a half a tsp or so of vanilla extract to a pint of whipping cream. You order the NO2 cartriges from Amazon and you have yummy fresh sugar-free whipped cream every morning for very cheap. We buy the 1/2 gallon of whipping cream from Costco. It's ~$7 and I think we've only ever had one time where it went bad before we used it all up.
ReplyDeleteAmber, do my carbs all have to be whole grain? I always stay under 120 a day and always less than 40 a meal, but sometimes when I'm on the run a fast food sandwich is what I get, is that ok to have white bun? Thanks for the help and I agree, love coffee and heavy cream :-)
ReplyDeleteDevon
Thanks for all the great ideas! Mike, Ill have to look into that, and Ill try asking for behind the counter cream supplies at Starbucks next time!
ReplyDeleteDevon - They dont have to be "whole grains" but just make sure you are getting your fiber from your food and are making good choices!
Regular coffee upsets my tummy so I make iced coffee using decaf instant from Trader Joes. Hubby is a coffee snob and even he likes this stuff. 1 spoonful to cup of water, 2T half & half and some stevia to sweeten. Pop in 4 ice cubes and you are good go. Most times I add Benefiber too just to add some fiber to my diet & if I am feeling decadent, I add some whipped cream on top. YUM!

Actually, I've always had my coffee with just H&H, no sweetners...Unless the coffee is ultra bitter, then it was a half packet of Splenda...
ReplyDeleteI also order a Breve Latte (it's a plain latte made with steamed H&H) from Starbucks or Caribou...or a nice chai that I make myself.
I must agree with you...Heavy cream makes a decidedly great cup of coffee...I won't even entertain fake dairy or anything less than H&H...it just lacks that richness that coffee deserves.
Love your blog, grrl!
Oh, I almost forgot to tell you that you can usually get a nice half gallon of heavy cream at Costco for a great price...about $5-6.
ReplyDeleteI used to drink my coffee with sugar and CoffeeMate also. I, like you, have switched to coffee with heavy cream and no sweetener. On those days where I crave a Starbucks, I make flavored coffee and add cream, stevia and ice. Delish!!
ReplyDeleteI usually have a venti iced coffee with a splash of whole milk and a packet of sun crystals. Yummy!
ReplyDeleteYou can get heavy whipping cream at Starbucks. They keep it in the refrig. Just ask and they will steam it for you or handle you the bottle to pour yourself.
ReplyDeleteTry it with heavy cream and a pinch of xylitol. Yummy!
