They are sweetened with Matlitol, which can upset some people's stomachs if you over eat. Maltitol is a Sugar Alcohol and considered a natural sweetener. They have 1gram Sugar/13grams Carbs/1gram Fiber for 2 macaroons for an S/C Value of 1/1. Almost all the Carbohydrates come from the Sugar Alcohol. They are also Lactose and Gluten Free. I loved the fact that they are made with only three ingredients: Unsweetened Sulfate Free coconut, maltitol, egg whites.
They also come in Chocolate and Carob flavors, which I have not tried or looked at the Nutrition Facts for, so I'm not sure if that are Belly Good. I would put them right up there with the Joseph's Sugar Free Cookies, as great BFC snacks. They can be hard to find, but I got mine at CarbSmart, which also sells through Amazon

This makes me want to mix up some of my tropical traditions coconut flakes with egg whites and maybe a few dates. Fun stuff!
ReplyDeleteOkay, I did it. 1 C (heaping) unsweetened coconut flakes, 2 egg whites, 4 dates, pitted and 1 tsp vanilla. Toss in food processor, scoop onto baking pad-lined pan w/ cookie scoop and bake at 325 for 25ish minutes or until starting to get golden on the outside. I was worried that they'd turn hard as rocks but they are very nicely chewy. And no weird gastric issues w/ the sugar alcohols (I don't do very well on those).
ReplyDeleteMike I love this! Ill make them for my next get together. Id much rather have a little natural fruit then Maltitol too! Did you take any photos? Id love for you to do a guest post with the recipe!
ReplyDeleteActually I took a whole bunch of photos. I'll send em over.
ReplyDeleteHi Amber, I'm a big fan of your blog, thanks so much for being such an informative voice on the BFC! Yesterday I picked up a bag of Emmy's Raw Macaroons and had one as my dessert and loved it, however I read a little closer and while the sugar count is only 1 gram they are sweetened with Agave. I know I should stay away from sugar but this is a teeny amount, is it still a no-no? Also, on another note, I am now taking psyllium husk 3 times a day, do I could them in my carbs for each meal? Thank you!!

Yes you need to count the carbs in the fiber supplements :) Agave isnt bad, its just generally too high in sugar grams. As long as the agave stays within the 5/2 per meal its okay. These look like a great option for BFC! Thanks so much for pointing them out.
