Sister M Weigh In: Week 2

End of Week 2 – Down 4 more pounds! (down 7.5 total in 2 weeks)
Pretty awesome week. Pounds…I was expecting more, but insights were huge.  First things first – natural sweetness in food. Wow – didn’t ever take the time to smell the roses.  Things like peanuts, tea, coffee w/cream.

I actually allowed my taste buds to do their job, and I could detect sweetness without adding sweeteners!  Found a couple bottles of SweetLeaf and put them to work, one drop at a time when I DECIDED I wanted more. (see my reviews on Liquid Stevia Lemon Drop and Vanilla Crème coming soon).
I also enjoyed having some real carbs without a net and didn’t plummet into a carb abyss.  Things like ½ cup of mash potatoes at a restaurant with my grilled protein were a good experience. Even made some ½ potato ½ cauliflower mashed potatoes at home that were enjoyable, had fiber and didn’t trigger any mindless eating.

Snack foods like chips or crackers – not so much.  For me, these are like heroin… I imagine. I don’t smoke or drink or do “drugs.” But I do “do” chips.  I actually bought some new fangled kettle chips that were on Jorge’s “good belly” page.  I actually counted them out on my plate with my lunch sandwich.  However, this lunch was at 4 pm at the end of a 9 hour work day and 9 hours of “momma do’s” combined.  I was famished. I wolfed down my plate and headed right back into the kitchen and counted out 18 more onto my plate and ate them. The third and forth trips were just grabbing a handful and the fifth trip was just dumping the bag onto my plate. 
So what did I learn? 
  • I can fail and get right back on the next meal.
  • I know the right thing to do.
  • I didn’t just eat out of the bag (?)
  • I confessed. 

My other big soul searching moment came after a conversation about what I would do if I had to do it all over again (aka..be in my 20’s and only 50 pounds to lose).  So I started given advice to this young mother about learning about nutrition, understanding how my body uses different nutrients, admit my shortcomings and strive to make new habits. So, is 50 (nearly) too old to make these admissions and make changes? Is that what I am saying?  Yes… I was.  So I’ve got 150 pounds to lose. But I think I have the knowledge, the support system and the dedication to stick to it this time.  It’s a journey. It’s not about having a perfect day.

I watched a little bit of an interview with Apollo Anton Ohno who said something like, “Before every day you go to sleep. Ask yourself one thing. Did you do every single thing you could today to make sure you did your best?  It’s hard to answer yes, every single day.”  I was like – EVERY SINGLE DAY! OMG… Have I EVER lived a day that I truly felt that I did EVERYTHING to be the best I could be?  Wow. What a waste of a day, of a month, of a year, of a life time to not at least STRIVE for that.   4. Awesome Sister M!! Great week for you. I am so happy for you. I too had a "moment" last week, just substitute chips for Cheez-its. Unfortunately I posted a gain, but got right back on the hourse the next day. Your sister said something very wise to me. I'm paraphrasing - 'Even if it is approved BFC, it doesn't mean you are safe to be alone in a room with it.' We all have our trigger foods, and we have to recognize them. I wish you much continued success!! We can do it!


  5. Congrats! We're never to old to learn new tricks. Hell, I'm *gasp* 60 (when did that happen?) and I still do stupid stuff. I have about 80 lbs to lose, and I, too, am an Atkins alumnae. But, obviously, something's not working because I keep falling off the wagon. This plan of controlled carbs will be a challenge, but I hope to learn and change and grow (in a good way). You and your sister are an inspiration.

I went ahead and ordered the 6 week menus from Jorge. I am going to follow them to a t and see how it goes. I am excited to get the shopping list on friday.

  7. Hang in there - sounds like you're doing great. I just posted how chips are my undoing so I know not to include them into my BFC program. I just lose all control - otherwise the program works well for me! (even with a thyroid problem)
