NUUN Electrolyte Tabs

One of the first things I noticed when I started serious running, was that there are no low sugar supplements or sports drinks. They are mostly loaded with:

A.) SUGAR or
B.) ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS.

Even while training for my half marathon, I found I still had to keep my sugar intake low or I'd gain weight. Yet I needed to a supplement during long runs. I could actually FEEL that my muscles and body needed better fueling and hydration. I found that telling (the usually very helpful) guy at the running shop I was on a low sugar/low carb diet was a big mistake (runners apparently aren't into Low Carbing!). So I learned to say "I eat a low sugar, diabetic type diet and artificial sweeteners upset my stomach". Nobody argued with that and they were actually super helpful!

Nuun tabs were the product I finally settled on. They come in tons of flavors, taste good and they actually work! I am a water hound and have to plan my runs along a route that has water fountains, or carry water which I hate to do. The first time I tried Nuun, I had a full glass of water with one tablet before my run. And to my surprise when I got to the water fountain (mile 2.5) I didn't even need to stop! Second fountain (mile 5) I just took a sip and splashed my face. Usually I gulp, splash and gulp some more... much to the annoyance of my running buddies, I'm sure, who never partake in my water fountain obsession.

Nuun comes in 11 different flavors: Kona Colada, Tri-Berry, Grape, Banana, Citrus, Orange, Tropical, Lemon Tea, Strawberry Lemonaide and Fruit Punch. I haven't tried them all yet, but so far I prefer the Tri-Berry and Strawberry Lemonaide.

Nuun electrolyte tablets contain 0 grams of sugar and >1 gram of carbohydrates, which on the Belly Fat Cure is an S/C Value of 0/0. It does contain Sorbitol, which is considered a natural sweetener and a sugar alcohol. I'm also pretty convinced that Runner's Diarrhea is a result of runners using tabs, bars and gels that have sugar alcohols in them. So runners, watch out for Malitol (and things that end in -tol) on the ingredients list of you suppliments! But the amount of Sorbitol in Nuun did not upset my stomach.

Nuun's U Hydration line has 0 grams of sugar and 1.2 grams of carbohydrate. It has no artificial anything and no sugar alcohols and is loaded with vitamins too. U Hydration comes goji berry green tea, tangerine ginger, and cucumber mint.

Nuun products can be found a sports equipment (REI, Sports Authority) and running stores. Check their retail locator HERE. Check back on Tuesday for a Giveaway of Nuun Electrolyte Tablets!

Disclaimer: While I found, researched and purchased this project on my own, the folks at Nuun provided me with additional samples to aid in this review.

  2. Awesome! I haven't needed any supplementation beyond the hydration stations in my 5K races so far, but I imagine I might need something once I up to the half maration - not that I've commited yet, but it's good to have optins. :)

  3. Amber, I used to like to run years ago, but then I hurt me knee. It's fine now, and I think I would like to start tyring to run, or really jog again. I think I need to take off a bit of weight before I start, just to ease the pounding on my knee, and not to stir up any trouble. Did you wait until you lost a bit of weight to start running?

  4. I have the same question as Pattie.... Would love to turn my 4-6 mile walks into at least partial runs but am worried about the stress load on my creaky joints. We have a beautiful river path in front of our house, so i really have no excuse (other than fear of ridicule....no matter how much weight i lose i will never look like a "runner"). Im 5'5" and was sort of kicking 160 around as a weight i might want to start the ramp up. What do you think?

  5. Hey Amber! I love the Curves workout! It suits my needs perfectly - I love the 30 minute full body workout. Now if only I could get myself to do the recommended 3x per week, I know I would be seeing more drastic results. I agree too, that body fat is a more accurate indicator of health than body weight. I wish it wasn't so hard to get accurate measurements! :)

  6. Hi Amber. Where did you find the So Delicious ice cream? I live in So. Cal and would like to try it instead of Clemmy's. I have no prob with the sugar alcohols in Clemmy's, but would like a new option.

  8. I love the idea. Thanks for introducing me to these electrolyte tabs. They just might be my favorite tabs, instead of my good old guitar tabs chords.

  9. There are 3 kinds of Nuun tablets, but only one (U Natural) does not have a sugar alcohol. The other two (Active and All Day) both have sorbitol. If you are sensitive to sugar alcohols (like me) - sorbitol can cause distress.
