I Did It! My First Half Marathon

I can't believe I actually did this! This weekend I ran the Kaiser Permanente San Fransisco Half Marathon. I actually RAN it! Never did I imagine I could do something like this. I did train specifically for a Half Marathon, and that made all the difference. Without that I would have really suffered and probably walked a lot. But as it was, I ran everything except the water stations. I walked through the water stations, which were every 3+ miles. Drank a cup and dumped one down the back of my shirt, then started running again. I felt really good the whole run, although part of it was really monotonous. There was something so amazing about running with a big pack of people all with the same goal and pace.

I have learned with my weight loss I can actually trust my body and what it is telling me. I added back more carbs in the days leading up to the race, after researching long distance running. I had a bad training week the week before and was a little (a lot!) nervous about race day. In the moment I felt great, although I had very short periods of mild discomfort. Today I am sore, especially my thighs and one heel feels bruised. Ibuprofen is my friend today! I finished at 2:20, which I'm happy with. I stayed within a 10 minute mile pace, which was my goal.

These are my BEFORE and AFTER photos. My kids explored Golden Gate Park on their scooters during the race with the Hubby and caught up with me at a few spots. That was so great and really motivated me! A couple of kisses from them was better than a cold cup of water!

(Diet Note: My weight is up today. Totally disproves the calories in/calories out theory! Im not worried, I wanted to fuel up my muscles and think I did the right thing. I am sure my body is retaining water and healing right now)

  6. Thank you all so much! I think my body is rewarding me for waking up and finally for the first time ever, taking care of it! I did not have the ability to do this more than a year ago either, I just wanted to be able to hike 3 miles. After those hikes, I felt a bit like I do today ;-)

I really appreciate all your well wishes!

  10. AWESOME!!! Nothing feels better than being proud of yourself. A million people can tell you "good job", but to really feel it about yourself is a true gift. You did GREAT and I know you must be so proud. I think it gives us all hope. Not that we'll each run a marathon... but that our dreams are possible.
    Congrats again,
BFCFT from Jorge's 28 days of FT

BTW: What will you do now that our 28 days are over? Go back to BFC?

  11. Amber - you've really taken charge of your life. Setting goals and accomplishing them is so important.. not just for you, but for the boys to see your successes and want that for themselves. What a great role model you are for them AND me! I wanna be like you when i grow up...LOVE YA...Mish

  12. BFCFT - I went back to regular BFC last week to carb up for the race. but now Im back to no grains - pretty much. Once my body clams down, Ill re-evaluate how much grains I want in my diet. Ill probably end up with a low grain version of BFC. Thanks so much for your comments!

    Thanks Mish! Love you!

  13. Awesome job on your first half marathon!!!

I want to give you an update on my blog:

Here's the new address for my blog...
    http://losingweightglutenfree.blogspot.com/

I decided that I don't want BFC forever linked to my blog. I left an update on my current post, which is not showing in the dashboard for some reason, but it's there.
