Sister M Weigh In: Wk3 & Friday Fallout

Ok – so it’s Friday - weigh in day…and I’m up 1 ½ pounds. Trying not to let it get me down.  I suspected as much. I’m on some antibiotics that could be effecting me. But the bottom line is, I could have done better.  I have had a good week, though…learning and growing mentally. And it is a journey, a long journey for me.  Amber’s hounded me to use the tracker, which I finally did… yesterday.  I think the tracker is part of the control, or lack of it.  I’ve figured out that I’ve been letting life and food just “happen” to me instead of planning.  I’ve decided to pre-plan on the tracker to at least show me what I plan on eating today, and stick to it as best I can.  That includes snacks AND meals.
Amber has been such a good source of support and I hate letting her down. I know she won’t give up on me (even if I wanted her too!) and my other sister and family are good to catch me when I fall.  Looking for a song for the week, but nothing seems to fit. How about “Hold On” from Wilson Phillips?
Sister M
 ***********************
Note from Amber: I really feared this would happen. When I heard the word "Panera" for lunch, that clenched the deal. She would not track her meals and was experimenting a lot with foods instead of concentrating on the basics. She also eats out a lot. We live about 1500 miles apart and she is my oldest Sister, so getting her to listen to me is sometimes hard. When we did put a few of her days into the tracker yesterday, they were over on Carb servings every day and included not one, but two servings of chips each day. My big suggestion is to bring your lunch every day next week, completely stay away from chips for a week and have Jay Robb shakes in the evening or late afternoon (or whenever your snacking urge hits). The shakes are big and filling, and really good. Keep it simple and boring for a few weeks and track after EVERY MEAL. And remember its a process, I'm not judging her and love her tons! Learn from this week, improve and make next week your very best week! Sister M is going to ROCK Week 4!

I have listed a few of my meals this week as an example to show you can eat great meals that have carbs and still lose weight. If you would like the S/C Tracker I created it is available here.

Product Review: Nature's Hollow Preserves

One of the products I've most wanted to try on the Belly Fat Cure is the elusive Nature's Hollow Preserves. I just woke up one day craving toast and jam. I had the right bread for toast, but was lacking the jam! For four months I had scoured the local Whole Foods, which supposedly carried it, but to no avail.

I was so thrilled when CarbSmart sent me a few jars to try that I immediately popped my bread in the toaster! I am undecided on which I like better, but I tried the Strawberry and Blueberry and they were both great! The next morning I added a spoonful to my oatmeal, and loved that too. I could see using them as a glaze for meat or on top of cheese to serve at a party. The Belly Fat Cure book also has several ideas on how to use the preserves on "BellyGood" foods.

Nature's Hollow products have Jorge Cruise's Belly Fat Cure Seal of Approval, which only a few products have been given. They are all natural and have only a few ingredients. They tasted very fresh, and satisfied the need to get a little fruit in on this plan. To my knowledge they are the only jams available in the U.S. that are sugar free and made with natural ingredients. They are sweetened with Xylitol, a Sugar Alcohol which is sugar free. They have 0 grams Sugar and 7 grams Carbohydrates for an S/C Value of 0/1 for 1 TBSP.

They are available at CarbSmart via Amazon for $5.99 each.

I give Nature's Hollow Preserves 5 stars, I thought they were a wonderful treat. The only problem is their availability, it would be nice to pick them up locally. They are one of the items in this week's giveaway, so don't forget to enter if you haven't yet!

Note: Some of the preserves were shipped with an incorrect label that states 5 grams Sugar. That is incorrect, they are 0 grams Sugar. Very confusing, but I called the manufacturer myself to make sure. I use Trader Joes Sprouted Flaxseed bread which is 2g Sugar/14g Carbs for two slices.

Disclosure: I was provided this product free of charge in order to review it. It in no way effected my opinion of the product.

Weigh In: Week 18

I can't believe I have been on this plan for 18 weeks! I have to say, it is easier now then it was in the beginning. What is more surprising is that I lost 2lbs this week. I think that is nuts, crazy, bananas! To me, at this stage, that number is big. I feel like I'll jinx it all if I talk about it too much, but I could have the 40lbs gone in the next few weeks! (I keep a chart of my weight loss at the top left of the page)

I have decided to post photos again at 20wks, I'll be curious to see any difference. Sister M asked if I felt skinny yet, and the answer is a resounding "No!" Of course I feel different. I feel comfortable in my skin for the first time in a long time. Everything in my closet fits or is too large. I've gone from a tight size 14 (refused to buy 16s, but XL was okay somehow) to a comfortable 10. I think when I shop next, Mediums will fit me better then Large. When I see my face in the mirror or a photo, I recognize it. I look more like "me" again. I have no recollection of the last time I was in the 150s, 13 yrs ago maybe? But do I feel skinny? No.

Depending on how much weight you have to lose, my 159.5 pounds sounds obese (which officially I'm just overweight now according to my Wii Fit) or tiny. It's all relative. According to the medical weight charts a 5'4" Women should weigh between 114 - 151 pounds depending on her frame size. I emailed Jorge a while back and asked what my ideal weight should be. He answered that I should concentrate on being healthy and not a number on the scale and being super skinny. A little ironic coming from the guy who's book makes big weight loss claims I thought, but still a good answer.

For those of you with the bigger numbers to lose, I want to make sure you don't see me as bragging. I know your struggle is different from mine and some days it seems like an impossible task. I only tell you these details to encourage you and know IT IS possible. Make a decision, inform yourself with the details of the plan and start taking steps to use it in your life. If we don't believe in ourselves, then nobody else will either. It shows on our faces and in how we take care of our bodies. Yes, it will not be easy at first to make big changes to your eating habits. But you CAN do it! And it will become easy in time. Because I did it, somehow. So I KNOW that you can too. (*group hug*)

I hope you entered the awesome giveaway that CarbSmart is sponsoring this week! You have all week to enter right HERE. I am so excited to say that I have more giveaways coming that all include hard to find Belly Fat Cure foods that I have loved! I hope you all love free stuff too!

Announcement and Giveaway!

The very first thing you hear from someone starting the Belly Fat Cure is how difficult it is to find the products. I know this is a struggle I had, as have many of you. I scour local health food stores and google "stevia", looking for the just the right things.

That is why I am so excited to inform my readers that I will be collaborating with the website CarbSmart! CarbSmart has been delivering Low Carb products for 11 years, and now has a dedicated Belly Fat Cure section on their site. While other sites sell some of the same products, I was impressed with their dedication to the new Low Sugar Revolution that Jorge Cruise is starting.

Nothing will change here at Me & Jorge, but at least once a month I will contributing an original post there too. You can check out my first article, Belly Fat Cure Basics, here. I will also be recommending products for them to carry that have great S/C Values, so let me know if there are things you just can't find anywhere! When I review products, I always try to let you know where I found it, so you will see CarbSmart pop up on more reviews, with a link back if you are interested in buying it there or just to further research the product.

To help get you all as excited about this as I am, Carbsmart is sponsoring a great giveaway for my readers! It is their Belly Fat Cure Starter Kit that retails for $49.99 and includes several products which have Jorge's Seal of Approval:

Sister M Weigh In: Week 2

From Sister M:

End of Week 2 – Down 4 more pounds! (down 7.5 total in 2 weeks)
Pretty awesome week. Pounds…I was expecting more, but insights were huge.  First things first – natural sweetness in food. Wow – didn’t ever take the time to smell the roses.  Things like peanuts, tea, coffee w/cream.

I actually allowed my taste buds to do their job, and I could detect sweetness without adding sweeteners!  Found a couple bottles of SweetLeaf and put them to work, one drop at a time when I DECIDED I wanted more. (see my reviews on Liquid Stevia Lemon Drop and Vanilla Crème coming soon).
I also enjoyed having some real carbs without a net and didn’t plummet into a carb abyss.  Things like ½ cup of mash potatoes at a restaurant with my grilled protein were a good experience. Even made some ½ potato ½ cauliflower mashed potatoes at home that were enjoyable, had fiber and didn’t trigger any mindless eating.

Snack foods like chips or crackers – not so much.  For me, these are like heroin… I imagine. I don’t smoke or drink or do “drugs.” But I do “do” chips.  I actually bought some new fangled kettle chips that were on Jorge’s “good belly” page.  I actually counted them out on my plate with my lunch sandwich.  However, this lunch was at 4 pm at the end of a 9 hour work day and 9 hours of “momma do’s” combined.  I was famished. I wolfed down my plate and headed right back into the kitchen and counted out 18 more onto my plate and ate them. The third and forth trips were just grabbing a handful and the fifth trip was just dumping the bag onto my plate.
So what did I learn?
  • I can fail and get right back on the next meal.
  • I know the right thing to do.
  • I didn’t just eat out of the bag (?)
  • I confessed.

My other big soul searching moment came after a conversation about what I would do if I had to do it all over again (aka..be in my 20’s and only 50 pounds to lose).  So I started given advice to this young mother about learning about nutrition, understanding how my body uses different nutrients, admit my shortcomings and strive to make new habits. So, is 50 (nearly) too old to make these admissions and make changes? Is that what I am saying?  Yes… I was.  So I’ve got 150 pounds to lose. But I think I have the knowledge, the support system and the dedication to stick to it this time.  It’s a journey. It’s not about having a perfect day.

I watched a little bit of an interview with Apollo Anton Ohno who said something like, “Before every day you go to sleep. Ask yourself one thing. Did you do every single thing you could today to make sure you did your best?  It’s hard to answer yes, every single day.”  I was like – EVERY SINGLE DAY! OMG… Have I EVER lived a day that I truly felt that I did EVERYTHING to be the best I could be?  Wow. What a waste of a day, of a month, of a year, of a life time to not at least STRIVE for that. Try asking that question. This week’s song has to be – Heather Small’s – PROUD. (What have you done today to make yourself feel PROUD?)  Thanks for everyone’s comments and support! – Sister M

Coaching for Women Over 40 with Jorge Cruise

There is a lot going on in the Belly Fat Cure world this week! Jorge is all over Facebook and offering up a new coaching class, similar to the one I took, but specifically for women over 40. I'd love to see which of my readers signed up or chose not too. I'm just curious! I may be part of the class as a mentor, I'll let you know what happens with that. But I am not an employee of his, nor am I paid at all by him. The new class price is just under $400 for 6 weeks of coaching and another offer for $97 to get only the menus.

If you would like to meet an Accountability Buddy, which I found super helpful (Meet my buddy Dave here) you can use the comments section below to do that. Either put in your email or if your Google/Blogger profile is setup that way, they can contact you through there.

ps. I have a big announcement on Monday, so be sure and check back!

Weigh In: Week 17 and Valentines

I lost 1.5lbs this week on Jorge Cruise's Belly Fat Cure Carb Swapping Program. (Boy, that's a mouth full) That is 34.5lbs total lost, and 5.5lbs to my goal weight of 156. The light at the end of the tunnel is shining so bright, it almost hurts my eyes!
I want to mention, I have not exercised in the last 3 weeks, except twice I've done Wii Fit Boxing and Hula Hoop. With my move and being just a little sick, I didn't have the energy or the time for my big hikes/runs. My kids are off school this week, so I won't have 3 seconds to myself this week either. But when I start again next week I will be curious to see how it affects my weight loss.
I hope you all had some great 85% Dark Chocolate for Valentines Day! My Husband, in all his awesome geekiness, had no idea it was Valentines (isn't there an App for That?). But my boys, 5 and 8, woke me up bright and early at 7am on Sunday morning with handmade cards and lots of hugs and kisses. They were so sweet and excited! I had bought Chocolate muffins for the kids already and the Husband redeemed himself by making pancakes for breakfast. Of course, I partook in none of this and made my Pumpkin Oatmeal for the 120th time (or so it seemed). I really didn't mind. The smell of pancakes and syrup used to cause cravings, but not now. Strangely my morning coffee with cream and Benefiber is so good, it feels like a treat! Weird, right? I have certainly learned to eat differently then the rest of my family. As I've said, I'm the only one in the house on a diet. The of rest of them are skinny little things! I guess I was eating up all the bad food, and leaving none for them! ;-) (Jack Sprat could eat no fat, his wife could eat no lean...) But I am being much more careful with my kids and their sweets. Limiting them to just one, instead of a few, and having them much less often. But they are growing kids, and I'm not turning into the crazy Mom quite yet, who says they can't have any sugar at all. Moderation is the key I think! Other sweet gift I got for Valentines was Sister M totally buying into this plan. It seemed easy, right? But what you didn't know is that I have been working nonstop to get her on the BFC since October! I am persistent if nothing else!! What about you? Have you converted the rest of you household to the Belly Fat Cure?

Book Review: The Biggest Loser Complete Calorie Counter

The Biggest Loser Complete Calorie Counter: The Quick and Easy Guide to Thousands of Foods from Grocery Stores and Popular Restaurants--As Seen on NBC [BIGGEST LOSER COMP CALORIE COU]My Sister M has been obsessed with finding a book to help her navigate her way through the Jorge Cruise's S/C Values, something beyond The Belly Fat Cure book which she already has. When she told me the story of how hard it was to find one with all the right information it in, I asked her to write up a review! I get most my nutritional info from Calorieking.com, but maybe some of you prefer a book too:

The Belly Fat Cure diet has required some new paradigms for me. For quite some time, I’ve thought of foods as having one dimension: How many carbs does it have? But BFC brings food into a three dimensional view by counting carbs, sugar, and fiber grams. I didn’t realize what a daunting task that was until I couldn’t find all three in just one book. Searching for such a book made me realize just how single sighted I had been about carbohydrates. As I scanned the book shelf in person and online, I even found myself saying, “Who would just want to know how many carbs are in a food?” The Biggest Loser Complete Calorie Counter book was the ONLY one I found that included carbs, sugar and fiber required by the BFC diet. In addition, it also includes calories, protein, fat (plus saturated fat) and sodium.

The 226 page book is slim and nicely organized into 28 categories with staples like vegetables, fruits, breads plus gelatins, grains, nuts and beverages, plus a separate expansive Sport Drink and Sports/Nutrition Bars sections.

These sections include fresh, generic and name brands. In addition, there is a quick look for generic entrees and side dishes like macaroni and cheese or chicken pot pie. There is also a nice restaurant section where I counted about 36 different restaurants from Arby’s to Wendy’s and mall stops like Cinnabon, Annies and Starbucks. Some of the menus seemed to be along the “don’t ask, don’t tell” line, where only the lower calorie entrees were listed.

The calorie counter is prefaced by a section on how to read labels and a brief explanation for the different nutritional headings. There is also a nice little section of “Top 20 Lists and Tips” from previous Biggest Loser contestants for snacks, eating out and desserts.

My only suggestions would be to color code the nutritional grid and I would like to see it in a spiral format to keep it from becoming too dog-eared too quickly. Overall, this little book is a “must have” to keep informed on the BFC diet.

Product Review: Lipton Vanilla Caramel Truffle Tea

Lipton Black Tea, Vanilla Caramel Truffle, Premium Pyramid Tea Bags, 20-Count Boxes (Pack of 6)I had seen Jorge use the Lipton Vanilla Caramel Truffle Tea to make a protein shake on pg. 99 of the Belly Fat Cure, and it looked really good! I'm a big tea drinker, as you may have noticed, but had never heard of this tea. This weekend I hit up Safeway and there it was on the top shelf of the tea aisle, and on sale for $2.99. I also love a sale!

I'm a little bit of tea snob, just a little tiny bit, so I was really suprised with the great aroma and flavor of this Lipton tea. This is agreat tea to have just hot, iced or in the wonderful protein shake Jorge recommends. The bags are tiny little net pryminds and give it more of a premium tea feel. A little bit of natural sweetener and a touch of cream bring out the flavor even more, if you need it.

As I write this, I have a little steamy pot of it seeping.  It smells so good! This is a great find to satisfy the olfactory senses. I think they are perfect for curbing the appetite, just like a Star Bucks Vanilla Latte used to do it for me. If you can't find this brand, it is available from Amazon in bulk, from the link at the right. I'll be on the look out for similar teas too, and let me know in the comments what your favorite tea finds are!

Most all brewed tea is 0grams Sugar/0grams Carbohydrates and can be a great delivery method for your Benefiber doses, warming up on cold night, or served over ice after it has cooled.

(note: I altered the recipe from Pg. 99 and did not include whipped cream and special caramel syrup on top, or any sweetener in the shake itself and it was great!)

Sister M Weigh In: Wk 1 & Revelations

From Sister M:
Ok – one week down! How’d I do? Well, I was done 3.5 pounds this morning, but not celebrating yet. That was part of the gain from my New Year’s gain. But I’m in the right direction again. New realizations?
I think that the artificial sweeteners affected me more than I realized. While I didn’t keep a bucket of the stuff at my side all day, I relied heavily on them. My daily Atkins or South Beach Breakfast bar was my quick breakfast fix. I’ve found a local place that is supposed to carry a Carb Rite or Carb Smart breakfast bar with Stevia. I’m going shopping there today (yay-PAYDAY) to take care of that. My one diet pop a day and/or “on the go” peach tea fix was HARD to give up. OMG, again, I didn’t drink liters of them, but I looked forward to it every day. Actually found a new “on the go” stevia sweetened packet BUT – it has evaporated cane powder and it’s like 6 carbs and 6 sugars per packet (look again – one packet is TWO servings – BASTARDS!) Sorry.
I’ve also been fighting Amber on the FiberCon and didn’t think I needed it. I had regular, easy going bathroom habits. BUT… I think that either the fiber or the artificial sweeteners I was getting from the bars were assisting there. Cause all that’s not happening now. So okay, I’ll buy the FiberCon.
I’ve definitely been eating less, probably not enough, but that will improve as I get more comfortable with the diet. I am going to spend the night with my daughter at college tonight (about an hour away) and take her to see a movie. I packed a baggie of the Goldfish so I won’t be tempted to mindlessly eat popcorn.
Amber was mean to me about my favorite low carb snack. The versatile pork rind. The make great nachos, salad croutons, and movie crunchy snacks. Show me where Jorge says something about pork rinds. I even told our other sister (JJ) that Amber was mean to me. She didn’t give me any satisfaction. JJ said she wishes she had a Jillian to get onto her. Anyso, Amber actually called back in about 10 minutes and apologized. (But I haven’t eaten any since!) However, I would genuinely like to know Jorge’s stance on pork rinds.
Amber’s shipping me a good starter kit and I can’t wait to get it. Cannot find Uncle Sam’s cereal here. Can’t wait to try the Sugar Cookie tea. Although, I’m getting hungry just thinking about it. I need to take my measurements..and take my picture. I actually got a haircut and some highlights for my “photo-shoot.” You know, so you won’t look at my chins. Thanks to everyone for their well wishes. Song of the week…Pink’s Glitter in the Air.
**********************************************************
From Amber:
Right after she sent me this, she called to say she had actually won the Gold Medal Jorge talks about here in this video! So while she thought she had great BMs she realizes that she could do much better and it sounds like she got rid of what Jorge calls "False Belly Fat". Jorge talks a lot about poo, and it part of your body functioning properly!
She is right, I was mean one day, turns out I'm not the great coach I thought I'd be! I felt she was just doing Atkins with a tiny twist and Prok Rinds have no nutritional value. But then I realized it is a process, and for her to switch plans is a really HUGE thing. I keep encouraging Lean Proteins/High Fiber and that is the key. She was really fighting me on certain things: tracking, eating higher carb products to get the fiber in, and taking FiberCon. Carbs are scary to Atkins-ers, I get that. But think of using them as a "Fiber Delivery System" and keep them within the Belly Fat Cure 2 servings per meal/6 servings per day and see what it happens.
I am SO excited and proud of my Sister M this week! I knew she would Rock the Belly Fat Cure! How are you all? Anyone relate to her story and struggles?

Weigh in: Week 16

Week 16 makes four months, right? A quarter of a year sounds like a long time! I am down 2.5lbs this week to a total of 33lbs lost and 7lbs to go to my initial goal weight. I am currently 163lbs. That is the lowest weight I can remember in at least 9 years. And that, folks, makes me very happy!
I was running across the kid's school campus yesterday because I thought I might be late for the Kindergarten release. With the weight of my cell phone my pocket, my jeans began to droop, to the point where I had to hold them up while I ran. I later told the story to my husband over dinner and he and the kids thought this was a hilarious story. But the really funny part is that these are 12s that I couldn't squeeze into 4 months ago. The tight 14s I used to squeeze into? I can take them off without unbuttoning them now, and I look like an idiot if I attempt to wear them. Like the punk boys whose underwear is meant to show and the jeans are at their knees. Not a good look for a 40 year old woman at the PTA meeting!
I have a tip for you this weigh in day: Find a Good Belly beverage replacement for your old Bad Belly habit. Remember, there are two types of Belly Bad: 1) High sugar/carbs and 2) artificial sweeteners (sucralose/splenda, sacharin, aspartame). Mine was Coke Zero and I kicked it with homemade iced and hot teas. I mix flavors and brew it all the time. Sister M's was Peach flavored Mixie Sticks which I think are Crystal Light. She hasn't found a replacement yet, but I think it will solve a lot when she does.
I have loads of upcoming blog posts planned, but I don't want to dump them all one you at once! I try and post three times a week. If you have a question for me or a product you'd like me to try leave a comment. I read them all! Just a few of the upcoming things I have planned:
  • Lots of product reviews, things I eat everyday on the plan but I never thought to review them! To check out the reviews I've already done click here.
  • Updated Dark Chocolate review. I officially think I have tasted every 85% Dark Chocolate bar available in the Western US. If you haven't read my current list, get caught up now. They are the indulgent snack de jour on the BFC!
  • More Blog the Book with Jorge Cruise's Belly Fat Cure Carb Swapping System.
  • Update on my "Sister M" who is just starting the BFC. Read here story here, your comments so far have been really encouraging!
  • I'll be publishing a days worth of my meals each week like I did a while back. People are always asking what I eat. Did you download my S/C Tracker yet? It's available directly from my blog now! It may help you keep track of what you are eating, so give it a try.
Let me know how you are doing this week! Post your weigh ins and goals in the comments section , I'd love to hear how you all are doing too!

S/C Tracker Download

I think tracking my food intake has been one of my keys to success on the Belly Fat Cure. For the first three months I entered pretty much everything I ate. I would look at my numbers at night to determine if I had room for Dark Chocolate or another snack. And when my weight wasn't moving as fast, I looked back over my week to see where I had gone wrong.

I have made the tracker available to my Sister who has just start the BFC, so I wanted to make it available here for you all to use also. Click on the button and follow the directions below.

How to use the tracker: It was created in Google Spreadsheets, which is online and you will need a Google account to use it. The pros of this is that you can access it anywhere (any computer or from a smartphone). To do that choose File: Make A Copy. You need to be logged into a Google Account to do this.

Want to add the Me & Jorge BFC Tracker to your iPhone? See my video instructions here. You must do the above step first, saving the spreadsheet to your own Google Account first. Otherwise it will say "Read Only".

If you prefer to use Excel, choose File: Download As: Excel. It should work just fine, but I havent really tested it there in a while.

Once you get started, please take a look a the Sample Day TAB at the bottom to get a feel for how to use the tracker. You will only need to enter info in the MEAL and FOOD INTAKE columns for each week, everything else will be calculated for you. The foods I eat are already entered in the LOOKUP TABLES tab. You will need to adjust this for the foods and brands you eat. Calorieking.com is a great resource when looking up the values for entry in the LOOKUP TABLE. This information is very important, and the food name must exactly match the LOOKUP TABLE and your FOOD INTAKE or else you will get an error.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
If you have questions about or problems with my Belly Fat Cure Tracker, this is where to post them!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Update: 4/29/2012

To access the original S/C Tracker from Jorge's Belly Fat Cure book, it is currently available HERE. You need to print it and fill in the ovals and Jorge's team moves it around all the time, so the link may not work for long.

Instead of using my spreadsheet here, I highly recommend using the My Fitness Pal App instead. Check out my post on it HERE.

Jorge Cruise and Hayhouse Publishing has also released an iOS app for the Belly Fat Cure. For more info see my review HERE

Meet My Sister - Starting BFC Today

I am so excited to say that my sister has decided to the BFC! I told her if she didn't lose 12lbs in a month, she can quit and I'll stop bugging her about it. She is a long time Atkins devotee, but I think she will rock the Belly Fat Cure! I have agreed to be her coach, making meal plans, grocery lists, must have lists and getting her to use my Tracker. Ill be sharing it with you all too! Her issues are different than mine; she has been overweight since she was a teenager, is about to turn 50 and has over 100lbs to lose (she wont tell me exactly how much). She is such a beautiful person, and I know so many of you can related to her struggles. I can't wait to share her story with you all! She is a little shy, so I'm going to refer to her as Sister M.

You have been doing Atkins on and off for many years. Why do you keep trying to stick with it?  I lost 80 lbs in about a 10 months and it seemed effortless. Very easy to eat out and stay on.

What is it that makes Atkins attractive to you?  Cutting back the carbs really cuts the cravings.  Cuts out the reflux and heartburn.  No calorie counting.

What made you decide to do the BFC? You did… plus I’m ready to try something different.

What are your fears with trying a new diet plan?  I’ve had a low carb breakfast bar and coffee every morning for the last 5 years. It’s easy and fast. I don’t have to think about it. Worrying about that. I like something sweet in the morning and that’s my fix.  Need to find a replacement for it. Biggest thing is going to be counting everything again until I get my regular meals down. Got the book in last night and was surprised at a lot of the swap ideas.  Better Cheddars?? We’ll see if I can trust myself around an open box. Clearly will need to portion out a lot of stuff.

Are you ready to give up those artificial sweeteners that Atkins relies so heavy on? Because you know, I think that is key!  Yup. I had my coffee this morning with a packet of Stevia and a packet of Benefiber.  I also keep the crystal light “on the go” packets in my purse for a quick fix and really like them. So, I’m not going to throw those out cuz the kids like them and in a pinch… Oh… I do usually have a sugar free popsicle at night with Brad. I’ll miss that.

Will you share your before/after photos and actual weight? I had no plans on putting up photos, but my readers really motivated me to do it! (Why or why not). Yah – I’ll share photos. And I’ll share my measurements. I actually bought a LOOONGGG measuring tape last night!  The weight, I’m not going give. It’s too painful and embarrassing and depressing. Leave me alone about my weight.  And you can post this.  Just put MORBIDLY OBESE. I would give you my BMI but you know too much about me to back into my weight. I’m fat. I’m short. I’m old.

OK. I’m putting a stake in the ground on my first day on the BFC.  I turn 50 this year and would really like to be a normal sized person again.  I gained 100 pounds after a year of marriage and birth control pills 30 years ago.  Have battled to keep it under 300 pounds for the last 10.  I’m either on a diet and losing, or off a diet and gaining.  My last phase before returning to Atkins last October, I affectionately refer to as my “hurry up and die phase.” I was eating as much as I could as fast as I could.  I was the ultimate definition of insatiable.  I couldn’t sleep at night because of the reflux and the fullness.  It went on for about 6 months before I confided in my other sister about what was going on, although I have NO idea why I was on such an obvious path of destruction.  With my sibs and mom participating, I lost about 25 pounds by Christmas and made it through New Years, but have not been able to stay focused since then.

I’ve got two GREAT kids, 22 and 14 and a great husband of almost 30 years.  I’ve got a fabulous support system with my sibs and mom always supporting my weight loss programs.  I love them all dearly and support them in their endeavors as well.  But they’ll never understand the whole picture of a morbidly obese woman and her struggles….(I PRAY!).   Talk of sizes 10s and 8’s and 6’s…it’s all, well… pie in the sky to me.  I truthfully don’t know if that can ever happen for me.  I think my life could be so much different at a size 12.

About 5 years ago, I went to Baylor Medical Center in the DFW for a consultation for gastric bypass surgery.  They are the top place with the lowest morbidity rate. They have an extensive screening process and it took about six months from first contact to surgery.  After the initial consultation, I had a doctor’s visit with my primary physician.  The nurse and the doctor made some off the cuff remarks about my size, to each other. I even joked along with the nurse and told her to watch her feet as I laid back on the table without a bra on.  I left there feeling ….I don’t know,  complete failure, depression, embarrassment. Rock bottom.  I was meeting a girl friend for lunch after the appointment at a local Tex Mex restaurant and was ready to load up on the salsa and chips, but was too depressed to partake. I felt that everyone was looking at me.  This friend probably didn’t weigh 100 pounds and was constantly chatting me up about Atkins.  I had tried everything but that. Who cared if you could eat what you wanted as long as it didn’t have any carbs. That’s all I wanted!  So I ordered what she did and ate what she did.  For the next 3 days, I ate no carbs.  I told no one of my experience. On the 4th day, I woke up with a terrible headache, but decided to weigh an was down 10 pounds in 4 days.  I bought the Atkins book that day and that was the beginning.

About 10 months later and 80 pounds down, I had a hysterectomy.  My surgeon and I agreed that with the large apron of fat hanging below my abdomen, that my incision would not be able to heal and we had a plastic surgeon close and perform a panneculectomy.  I lost 9 pounds of skin that day, and that was the last loss I would see. After the hysterectomy, I quit walking and could not stay on program.  I’ve come and gone off Atkins a dozen times in the last 5 years with some success, but always find myself back at the scales with my head hanging low.

So here I am today.  Amber has promised to be my coach and I’m trusting her.  Thanks for giving me a chance to share in your success, Amber!

Weigh in: Week 15, Ch. 2 and Artificial Sweeteners

Okay, tough week here! Long story short, we moved. We moved quickly. And we moved ourselves. A little history here is required: Thirteen months ago I moved half way across the country, leaving my beautiful home with renters since I couldn't sell it, thanks to my street being full of foreclosures. I moved to THE most expensive area in the country so my husband could take his dream job. But not selling my house and crazy home prices here, left me being a renter. Ugh. The owners of our rental house decided at the end our twelve month lease that they are going to sell the house. So we moved. Quickly.

With all the hard work moving and barely having time to eat, I was positive I would have a good loss this week. I could just feel it! But alas Monday morning, I couldn't find my dagnabit scales. I was so upset that I actually called my husband (at his dream job) and started crying "I need those scales NOW!" I only realized I was overreacting a tad when he said "Amber, do I need to come home?" He's never said that, even when I was 9 months pregnant and miserable. I eventually found the dagnabit scales in a box labeled "TOYS", and I registered a loss of .5. Stupid, stupid scales. What do they know?! So I'm a little bitter this week, and tried and sore and bruised.

I did, however, read Ch. 2: One Critical Key of Jorge Cruise's Belly Fat Cure. I am very thankful I took the 12 Week Live Coaching Class with Jorge, as I don't feel the book really gets across some very important points. The most important part of Ch. 2 for me was about sweeteners. Blue packets, pink packets, yellow packets. They aren't good for us. Some are known to cause cancer in animals (so why not in me too) while others are known to destroy the natural flora and fauna in your digestive system. And all are known to increase your desire for the sweet taste, instead of satiate it, like I thought it was doing.

NO ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS ARE ALLOWED ON THE BELLY FAT CURE. Period. If you are on the plan, but haven't given them up, you will never lose the taste for sweets. Period. And that is the One Critical Key to the Belly Fat Cure. If I were telling you this in person, I would put both hands on your shoulders and look you in the eyes and say it slowly (Then we'd hug, and laugh about how crazy I am about this diet!) So imagine me doing that, instead of yelling ;-)

I didn't know about this when I paid my Husband's hard earned money (from that dream job) to sign up for the class with Jorge. And to be 100% honest, I may not have done it if I had known he would ask us to give up diet sodas. During Class #1, I kept thinking "he just means regular soda, not diet, surely!" And then I thought "we can add it back later, after our gut has healed". But after a week without my good friend Coke Zero, I didn't even care anymore. Habit broken. And I was no casual Coke Zero drinker. This is the number most shocking factor of the diet to people who know me.

To summarize this post, in case you couldn't follow my rant: My life sucked this week, I lost .5lbs which makes me angry at my scales and artificial sweeteners are bad. But it will all be better, I will lose the last 10lbs and you will not miss artificial sweeteners if you go cold turkey. I promise, these things are true!

Foods I Eat on Jorge Cruise's Belly Fat Cure

Today is weigh in day, but my scales are hiding from me! We moved this weekend, and the box I packed then in has gone missing. Ironic, thinking of all the times I have avoided them! I was actually really disappointed, since I think I had a good loss this week.

Since I am super busy with the move, I thought I'd share this video with you all. Its a bit long, but I walkthrough the foods I use most frequently on the Belly Fat Cure.

I hope you all are having a great week on the plan! I really love your comments and feel so grateful that you take time out of your busy day to stop by, read and say hi. Thank you!!
