Weigh In: Week 52 and Holding

Who stays on a diet for a year? I've never heard of such a ludicrous thing. If a diet really worked, then you'd do it for a few months, lose all your weight and be done with it. Well, that's what I thought.... but now I know better. For a diet to really, actually work it has to be more than that. It has to become a lifestyle, a Way of Eating (WOE).

So here I am at my 1 year mark on Jorge Cruise's Belly Fat Cure. I lost 53 lbs, from 196 to 143 lbs. I lost 9 inches off my waist. Went from a size 14/16 to 6/8 and XL/L to S/M. (I used to always be paranoid that I'd leave the house in a new pair of pants with the 14 14 14 14 14 14 tape still down the leg for the world to see.) I am wearing the same workout top in all my photos,it apparently has lots of stretch to it. But I went from XL running shorts to Medium and these are Small.

I had to buy new everything; from underwear, bras, jeans, shorts, tops, sweaters, swimsuit, pajamas, coat. Everything single thing except socks! Turns out 50 lbs is quite a difference on 5'4" body. I didn't buy much clothing during the process, I had old size 12s in my closet from years ago to get me through the months that I needed them. But mostly I just held out and let my clothing get really really baggy. I wanted to buy better clothing this time around, not just junk. I knew size 8 was my goal weight so when I got there I went shopping! I'll admit at first it was fun, shopping for new  smaller clothes. But then is was a huge pain in the ass! But sometimes I would have to laugh in the dressing room, because I couldn't believe things fit. Honestly, I deserved that since I've cried in the dressing room more then once when I couldn't get things past my knees.

I haven't lost that much weight since the last time I posted pictures (Week 30), the last several months have just been maintenance. I feel like I have toned up quite a bit though and I have set a goal for myself to run a Half Marathon (Kaiser Permanente San Fransisco in February is looking good to me). A year ago I was walking 3 miles twice a week. Now I try to do between 9-18 miles a week and try to run most of it. As you can tell from the photos I've lost a lot of weight in my rear and I attribute some of that to the running. But I believe 80% of my weight loss is the diet. The running has just toned what I had left.

You can follow my weekly weigh-ins over the year (that eventually became monthly and then periodic weigh ins as I got to my goal) HERE. I never intended to post photos of myself... never. In fact my starting photo is after I've been on the plan for about 6 weeks and already lost quite a bit. But post photos, I did! They are embarrassing to see and I'm nost sure I'll leave them up here forever either. I have to say the photos help SO MUCH. Even tonight after taking these last photos, I look at them and can see the huge difference. I can't always see the difference just looking down at myself. So take photos of yourself regularly, we need that reminder.

I followed the book 100% and did not deviate, make excuses, or come up with my own alternative plan. Some of the things I do and blog about I got from my 12 week class that I took with Jorge. It cost me $400, and I think I got my money's worth ;-) He periodically has these classes, but they are not always the same in duration, motivation, etc. I took from the class want I wanted, and that is a huge part of my success.

I want to say congratulations to my fellow BFC Classmates who I started this journey with and a handful of us stuck it out together. They have meant the world to me this year, and will be life long friends. Love you guys! Thanks for reading and commenting. This is just the beginning of our journey, not the end...

  1. Pretty cool. Started at the beginning of the year at 247 and am at 210. Trying to hit 200 by year end. But at this point, like you, it's become a lifestyle. I'm not really trying to lose any more weight, I'm just trying to eat right and hope it comes off.

Also, you lose any more weight and your ponytail will be a topknot, I think.

  2. Hey there! You look so great! It's so interesting from the photos that you can really see that your weight was centered in the middle. Your legs don't have as much as a dramatic change as your middle does. It's alllll good.

Yes, maintenance is always the hardest part (as I've been there twice before) and you never know what life is going to throw at you or what weird phase your body might go through. But at least you have a solid plan to stick with.

    Exciting about the marathon!

  3. HI Amber,

I can totally relate to everything that you said. But I still have 20 more to go to reach my goal. I look at myself and can't believe its me. I am also having fun shopping, but I can't really do that much because I am still getting smaller.

You look amazing! When I started the BFC I found your blog and it helped me tremendously!!

no running for me though - just walky walky :-)

  4. Mike - Thanks for laugh ;-)

Tiff - My thighs are a sore subject in the weigh loss experience! They are the last to budge and they are/were much larger than they appear. But Im not aiming for perfection and I have to be careful to not become obsessed on body parts.

Rosalie - That last 20 may be the hardest, but you are almost there friend! Im so glad I could share this experience with you!

  6. Hi Amber,

Happy 1 year anniversary. Thank you for your inspiration and all the information you freely give. You have been a great example of someone who has made a decision and stuck with it. It is a way of life and I wish you continued success.
Someone asked me yesterday if I ever cheat and I could honestly say NO. I don't need to, I have adjusted to this new way of living and truly hope I can follow it thru.
    Keep up the good work!

  7. Congratulations! you look great. ...thank you for your blog.

2 months on BFC, a couple of inches off the belly, still lots to go, but I know that it's possible with this new WOE.

  8. OMGoodness!! You look great! I didn't think you could look better than your fourth picture! Okay, it is official I am using your pictures as my screen saver! I started the BFC in January of this year and lost 10.5 lbs quick. I need to loose 35 to 40. But...I started to get bad about it in March when I thought I might be prego and then in June we went on vacation, sold our house and moved in with my in-laws while we build our new house. My MIL cooks southern home cooking every night!! At least I got her to stop making dessert along with it. Anyway, every so often I check in with your blog and the other day I read an old post about Fear (I think it was when you were recommending books) and it really hit home. I just sat down to download your tracker on my new computer and that new pic of yours will really get me going this time!! One question...how many days a week do you exercise? A couple of weeks ago I started a 20min interval run/walk program that I am trying to do 6 days a week but it's ending up more like 4. But, I'm thinking 4 should do it if I can stick to the BFC!!!!

  9. My first comment was just after I saw your picture...now I just read the post and I have to tell you that I hired a trainer a couple of years ago and went to her private studio 4 times a week and worked my bootie off!! Then she told me diet was 80% of it!! What the heck was I doing there then?!?!? I felt like I should be able to eat whatever since I was working out that hard...not the case! Anyway, you are right on when you said you think the BFC was 80% of your weight loss.

  12. Thanks so much Ladies!

April - I am so excited that my weight loss has motivated you! The thought of those photos being your screensaver is hilarious! I was actually reluctant to take the new photos because I was afraid I would look worse then the last ones. I was really, really pleasantly surprised. Sometimes we have to see ourselves through someone/something else. I have body imagine issues, that is really clear to me now.

Lisa - Congrats to you on your awesome loss! That is WONDERFUL!

I Run/Hike twice a week - so basically I do two really long ones.

  13. Amber...Congrats on your 1 year. You look so great. I am glad you took the before pictures. I know how hard it is to post them when you are overweight...I did not want to post my fat pictures either. But I cant wait until I start to see the difference like you. You look so great. I am always spreading the word about the BFC and your blog. It has really helped me through my journey. Thank you so much!

  14. Amber, I am so impressed with your determination to stick with it and look at your awesome results! I have never been terribly overweight but after entering my 40's, my weight started creeping up. I found myself miserable and had no idea how to 'diet' since it wasn't something I had to do in my younger years! A friend told me about BFC and I lost 10# in 2 weeks! I haven't lost any more, but I'm more comfortable with myself these days. Your blog has been a Godsend to me with all your advice and product information. What did you find helped you 'not cheat' with carbs? I must admit, there are times, I probably indulge in too many but thankfully, I've kept the 10# off! I've got my husband doing it too and while his weight loss isn't that significant, he shows me how his belt is in different notches! Thanks again for sharing your story, and I'm so happy for you and your AWESOME success. You look terrific!

  15. Amber - you look wonderful! Even though I fell off the band wagon since May, I still follow you. I am reviewing all my WOE literature and want to get focussed again. Thanks for sharing your experience and please continue.

  18. A fellow BFC class member here. I've lost 75 pounds in the past year. I still have a long way to go, but for the first time in a LONG time, I feel I can do this. I don't miss the sugar. And I feel much better.

You are an inspiration Amber. I read you regularly. Thanks for all of your reviews and posts.

  19. You are such an inspiration. I wondered though how you have read the new Fast Track book when it doesn't seem to be out yet? Where can I get it? Thank you.

  20. So great to see others from my class here! Congrats to you all on your weight loss, thanks so much for sharing!!

Jodi - I was part of a group that Jorge put through 6 wks on the Fast Track. We didnt get the book but were provided with information regarding the diet. You can read all about that here: http://www.meandjorge.com/2010/08/belly-fat-cure-fast-track.html. While I lost the last part of my weight on FT, most of it I lost on regular Belly Fat Cure.

  22. I just ordered the book. I'm really hoping this will stick. I used Weight Watchers and lost 60 lbs, but gained most of it back, it just didn't work well for me. Your results are amazing, congratulations on a job well done!
