Product Review: Zevia Cola Root Beer

I am just beginning Week 3 of Jorge Cruise's Belly Fat Cure and wanted to try and add in a few sweet tasting items. Zevia is the only cola that is "officially" BFC approved I've heard Jorge say. That is because it is all natural and is sweetened with Stevia and Erythritol (both natural sweeteners). I think the main reason there are only a few products that use Stevia is because it has only been approved by the FDA for use in the US for less than a year. Count on there being more Stevia sweetened items in time!

I purchased a Six Pack of the Zevia Root Beer at Whole Foods Market. They also carried the flavors called Cola, Orange and Twist. Zevia also makes the flavors Black Cherry and Ginger Ale, but my store did not carry them. I wasnt really interested in the other flavors, so I just got the Root Beer. (Amazon carries all the flavors!)

I like Root Beer, but it can be an acquired taste. It was not overly sweet tasting, but it was not bitter at all either (some think Stevia is bitter). I would say it tasted a lot like Root Beer's I've had a microbreweries. It will be great for a snack in the evenings, when I used to have my Coke Zero. But I'm not looking to "replace" my old habit and don't really want something that I feel the need to have each day. This was a nice, sweet, flavorful cola that I can have a treat every now and then.

I used to have 1-2 Coke Zero's each day, for many years. But have given up that habit on the BFC. Jorge encourages you to give up those artificial sweeteners, along with lots of real sugar, and he has a really good argument! So I did it, cold Turkey! I think Ive been off of artificial sweeteners for 2 full weeks now.

I would give Zevia Root Beer a 4 out of 5 stars! It has 0grams Sugar and 10grams Carbs for an S/C Value of 0/1.

  1. I wish I had tried the root beer now. Sounds good! The Black Cherry I tried was alright, but tasted like Infused flavoured mineral water. Pleasant but nothing to write home about. I also picked up an aftertaste. Not bitter, just odd. I enjoy mineral water with a twist & am not a big soda drinker so I am probably not the best opinion out there. :) I love Virgil's though! Looking forward to your review!
Congrats on releasing all that weight so fast!

  3. Tried the Stevia Cola and Yuck - but I am used to real Coke or even Diet Coke. I debated about the Root Beer or Cola. Guess I should have went with the Root Beer. I had to buy a 6-pack with was $5. Wish they had sold by the can instead.

By the way - I really like the Sobe and am so glad we have that available.

  4. As a hardcore Coke Zero drinker, I knew I wouldnt like the Cola "flavor" so I didnt even try it! I hear that Virgil's Diet is very good and uses natural sweeteners.

  5. A warning about Virgil's Diet sodas made with Xylitol - Xylitol can cause gas.

  6. I had one can of the cola flavor and it wasn't bad, I'm not a big soda drinker now (used to be). I bought 1 can each of the root beer, cola and orange - looking forward to trying the others now that I have read this.

Me, if you are a sweet lover try the Joseph's cookies they are great! I have had the oatmeal and the peanut butter. I like them both but the oatmeal is a bit more crunchy and has a spicy bite to them.

  7. I had the Zevia Root Beer and have to say that I was NOT impressed. It was fizzy like soda but had a strange after taste and the RootBeer flavor was very strong. I was hoping the Cola would be better but sounds like I'm wrong. Can't wait to try Virgil's and see how that tastes.

  8. I had a Zevia Ginger Ale today and it isn't too bad. I was surprised, after drinking the entire can, that it has 9 carbs. I'm new to BFC (4th day in) so I'm not sure if that's high or not but seemed high when I saw the 9 carbs for 12 oz.

  9. Oh, I can relate to the love of Coke Zero!!! I have been known to have up to 5 a day! I am into week three now and have not had a coke zero in 13 days (yes, there was a weekend away--valentine's day and I indulged in a zero...but none since)! I am so amazed by that. I have tried the SoBe water and I also really like those. I add lemon to water and sometimes for fun- two packets of stevia or pure via, pre-BFC I used splenda. So far I have lost 8 lbs, and I also feel great! More energy, happier, things seem good even with the 7 day rain forecast. Another amazing feat, feeling good and eating right, Ha! I am making the brownie's now, mainly for the husband, has anyone made them? Zevia cola is kind icky, but
I might try the root beer.

  10. Amy - congrats on going cold turkey, you are a girl after my own heart! The Dark Cherry is the best. A new review and giveaway is coming next week.

Gina - It does count as a carb serving. I see I put an S/C Value to the review, but will update now.
